Product description: |
| Hakuoro, the hero of Utawarerumono (2006), is a cipher to himself, the other characters, and the audience. He was found unconscious and wounded by Eluluu, the granddaughter of a village wisewoman. As he regains his strength, Hakuoro demonstrates a nobility of character as he aids the villagers. But he can remember nothing of his past, not even why he wears a mask that conceals the upper half of his face. The oppressive actions of the local lord forces the villagers into open revolt, with Hakuoro leading them. Utawarerumono offers more effective storytelling than many series with bigger budgets and higher profiles. Director Tomoki Kobayashi and his crew present a complicated narrative without boring the viewer with lengthy explanatory scenes. When Hakuoro organizes the villagers' resistance to the feudal army, Utawarerumono feels closer in tone to Akira Kurosawa's classic Seven Samurai than the recent animated "remake," Samurai Seven. (Rated TV PG V, suitable for ages 12 and older: violence, alcohol use) --Charles Solomon |
